FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

Cost will vary depending on the type, age and repair needs of the clock. £100s rather than £10s.

For modern electrical clocks I charge a flat rate of £30

How long will the work take?

A general overhaul will normally take between 6 - 12 weeks depending on the amount of work necessary, the complexity of the clock, and my current availability. Repair work may take longer. I normally only work on 1-2 clocks at a time.

I work full-time as a high school teacher in an Isle of Man High School. I repair clocks as a side business in my spare time/evenings, so I cannot in good faith make any guarantees about how quickly your clock can be repaired, though I will always endeavour to repair your clock in a timely manner and to my highest standard.

What type of clocks do you work on?

I currently repair antique/vintage mantle clocks, wall clocks, weight-driven clocks, spring-driven clocks and modern battery-powered clocks.

I do not currently repair anniversary clocks, carriage clocks or watches as these require more specialist tools. I cannot currently repair grandfather clocks due to space constraints.

What is included in a repair?

Each timepiece is given a full dismantle and first clean.

Each component is then checked and any necessary repairs are made. Working surfaces are polished or burnished, springs are serviced and the escapement action is tested.

The movement is then tested, and the case and dial are cleaned if requested.

Finally, depending on the clock and client request, the movement and case parts are finished to the original clockmaker's intention and given a second thorough clean. After this, gloves are used to handle the parts. The clock is assembled, oiled, tested, and regulated.

Is there a guarantee on the work?

Whilst I make every effort to repair each timepiece effectively, clocks are mechanical objects and by their very nature, there are times when additional work may need to be carried out after the clock is returned. For this reason, if there is a further problem with a clock within 12 months of repair then I will take the clock in again without any additional service charge. If additional parts are required then these will be charged for as normal.  See Full Terms & Conditions for further details.
